Make sure it's the real thing

Legal cannabis always traces back to one of the official sources above. Before you buy, especially online, check these.

  • The store is on your province's official list. If a shop or site isn't linked from the government source above, it isn't legal there.
  • Legal packages carry an excise stamp. A province-specific stamp on the package means it went through the legal system. No stamp is a red flag.
  • You'll be asked for ID. Legal retailers verify your age every time, in store and at delivery.
  • Prices that seem too good, with no lab results, are the biggest red flag anywhere. See the grey market, explained.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if a cannabis store is licensed?

A licensed store is on your province's official list of authorized retailers, the sources linked above. It sells sealed product with a provincial excise stamp and checks your ID. Shops and sites not on that list are part of the wider online mail-order market, where checking testing and reputation is up to you. Our is this store trustworthy? checker walks you through what to look for.

Can I buy cannabis online in Canada?

Yes. Your province runs an official online store or licenses retailers to ship within the province, and there is also a large online mail-order market that ships nationwide outside that system. Either way, judge a shop on its lab results and reputation. See buying cannabis online.

Can I buy from another province's store?

Cannabis retail is set up province by province, so you buy from a store or website authorized where you live. Government online stores generally ship within their own province only. Use the list above to find the official source for your province.

Is it cheaper to buy off the official list?

Less than it used to be. The price gap has narrowed to about $1.49 a gram, so licensed stores are now an easy, verifiable option. If you do shop the online mail-order market, judge a shop on its published lab results and reputation. See licensed vs mail-order and what cannabis costs.
