Cannabis seeds and germination basics

Where to get legal seeds, how to germinate them, and what a healthy start looks like.

If you’re growing your legal four plants at home, it starts with a seed. Getting germination right sets up the whole grow.

Buy seeds (or clones) from your province’s authorized cannabis retailers, the same legal channels you’d buy flower from. Look for feminized seeds if you want plants that produce buds (most home growers do).

The paper-towel method

A simple, reliable way to germinate:

  1. Dampen two paper towels (moist, not soaking) and place seeds between them on a plate.
  2. Cover with another plate to keep it dark and humid.
  3. Keep warm (around 21 to 26°C) and check daily.
  4. In 2 to 7 days, a white taproot emerges.
  5. Plant it root-down, about 1 cm deep, in your growing medium.

A healthy start

  • Handle the sprout gently, the taproot is fragile.
  • Keep the medium moist but not waterlogged.
  • Give seedlings gentle light; they don’t need intense light yet.

Set expectations

Not every seed germinates, and that’s normal, start a couple extra if you have them (within your legal plant limit once they’re growing). From here, see the home-growing basics.

Frequently asked questions

How do you germinate cannabis seeds?

A common method is the damp paper-towel approach: keep seeds warm and moist until a taproot appears, then plant them root-down.

How long do cannabis seeds take to germinate?

Usually 1 to 7 days. Warmth and moisture are the main factors.

What are feminized seeds?

Seeds bred to grow into flower-producing female plants almost every time, which is what home growers usually want.

Where can I buy cannabis seeds legally in Canada?

From provincially authorized retailers, the same place you buy flower.
