How cannabis is grown: from seed to shelf

A jar of flower on the shelf is the end of a months-long process. The journey runs from seed to sale.

Where it’s grown

Licensed producers grow cannabis in one of three settings, and each is a trade-off:

• Indoor: full control over light, temperature, and humidity, so the most consistent, high-end flower. It’s also the most energy-intensive and expensive.
• Greenhouse: natural sunlight topped up with lighting. A middle ground on cost and control.
• Outdoor: the cheapest and most sustainable, at the mercy of the season and weather.

How it starts

A grow begins from either a seed or a clone (a cutting taken from a proven plant, which grows into a genetic copy). Clones give predictable, uniform results, which is why most commercial growers use them.

The growth stages

• Vegetative: the plant grows leaves and structure under long light hours.
• Flowering: triggered by a shift in light, the plant develops the resin-rich buds, and their cannabinoids and terpenes, that get harvested. Growers watch the trichomes (the resin glands) turn cloudy to judge when it’s ripe.

Quality depends on genetics, light, nutrients, airflow, and grower skill.

Harvest, dry, cure

Buds are harvested, trimmed, then dried and cured, the patience steps that develop aroma and smoothness (the same principles home growers use; see drying and curing).

Testing and packaging

Before sale, legal cannabis is lab-tested:

• Potency: verified THC and CBD content.
• Contaminants: screened for pesticides, mould, and heavy metals.

It’s then packaged in plain, regulated containers with the standardized cannabis symbol and a label you can actually trust.
