How to tell if your cannabis is good
Judge dried cannabis by its look, smell, and feel, learn to tell trichomes from mould, and know when old flower is just weak versus when to toss it.
You don’t need to be an expert to judge cannabis. Your eyes, nose, and fingers tell you most of what you need to know. What to look for, and the one thing that means you should throw it out.
What good flower looks and feels like
Quality dried cannabis has a few tells:
- Frosty. A coating of tiny crystal-like trichomes that catch the light. That frost is where most of the potency and aroma live.
- A strong smell. A rich, distinct aroma is a good sign. Faint or hay-like usually means it’s old or poorly stored.
- A little give. Fresh flower has a slight stickiness and springs back a bit when you squeeze it. It shouldn’t be soaking wet, and it shouldn’t crumble to powder.
- Clean trim. Neatly trimmed buds with visible orange or amber hairs (pistils) generally point to more care in growing and finishing.
None of these is a hard rule, but together they paint a picture.
When it’s just old
Cannabis doesn’t last forever. Over months it dries out, the smell fades, the colour dulls toward brown, and it gets harsher to smoke. Old flower is weaker and less flavourful, but dryness on its own isn’t dangerous. If it looks and smells fine, just a bit tired, it’s fine to use. Storing it properly slows all of this down.
The one thing to watch for: mould
This is the part that matters. Mouldy cannabis should never be smoked, and it can be easy to miss.
The tricky bit is telling mould from trichomes. Trichomes are crystalline and sparkle. Mould is dull and powdery, cobweb-like, or fuzzy. Watch for:
- White powdery patches that don’t sparkle like frost
- Grey, black, or green fuzzy spots
- A musty, mildewy, or otherwise “off” smell instead of the normal cannabis aroma
- A damp or unusually heavy feel
A cheap magnifier or jeweller’s loupe makes it obvious. If you spot any of that, don’t take the risk. When in doubt, throw it out.
