Why does cannabis make your eyes red?

Red eyes are the classic cannabis tell. The good news: they’re completely harmless, and the reason might surprise you. It isn’t the smoke.

The real cause: blood vessels, not smoke

THC briefly lowers your blood pressure. In response, your blood vessels widen (dilate) to keep blood flowing, including the very small vessels on the surface of your eyes. More blood through those tiny vessels makes the whites of your eyes look pink or red.

That’s the whole story. It’s a normal circulatory response, not irritation or damage.

Why edibles redden your eyes too

The proof it isn’t the smoke: edibles, vapes, and tinctures can all redden your eyes too. Smoke can add a little irritation on top, but the redness itself is the THC at work, whatever the format.

How red your eyes get depends on the dose

Higher-THC products tend to cause more redness, since the effect tracks with how much THC is in your system. Some people barely notice it; others go quite pink. Genetics play a part too.

How to reduce it

• Redness-relief eye drops are the fastest fix.
• Stay hydrated, it won’t stop it, but it helps.
• Choose a lower-THC or balanced product if red eyes bother you.
• Wait. It fades on its own within a few hours as the THC clears.
