Cannabis and alcohol: what to know about mixing
Why combining cannabis and alcohol hits harder, and how to stay safe if you do.

Mixing cannabis and alcohol is common, but the combination is stronger and less predictable than either alone, a “cross-fade” that catches people off guard.
Why it hits harder
- Alcohol can increase THC absorption: so cannabis effects come on stronger and faster.
- The two together amplify impairment, dizziness, and nausea, the classic “spins” or “greening out.”
- Order matters: drinking then using cannabis tends to intensify the cannabis effect.
If you choose to combine
- Go slower than usual with both, especially the cannabis.
- Hydrate and eat something.
- Avoid edibles in the mix: the delayed onset plus alcohol is a recipe for taking too much.
- Have a calm space and someone around if you can.
If it goes wrong
Nausea, dizziness, and anxiety are the usual results of overdoing the combination. Stop both, sit or lie down somewhere comfortable, sip water, and wait it out. It passes.
If you want a predictable experience, don’t mix, enjoy one or the other. And either way, never drive. See our harm reduction guide.

Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to mix cannabis and alcohol?
Combining them ('crossfading') amplifies impairment unpredictably and raises the odds of greening out. If you do, go very light on both, and never drive.
Why does cannabis hit harder after drinking?
Alcohol can increase THC absorption, so the cannabis feels stronger and comes on faster, which catches people off guard.
What should I do if I mixed too much and feel sick?
Stop, sit somewhere calm, sip water, and don't add more of either. It passes. See our guide on greening out.
Does the order matter if I'm going to mix them?
Alcohol first tends to make the cannabis hit harder. But going low and slow matters far more than the order.
