Cannabis vapes: what to know before you try
How cannabis vaporizers work, the difference between dry-herb and concentrate vapes, and how to use them safely.

Vaping has become one of the most popular ways to use cannabis: fast-acting like smoking, but without the combustion. What to know before you start.
How vaping differs from smoking
Vaporizers heat cannabis or cannabis oil to release active compounds as vapour, without burning the material. That avoids many of the combustion byproducts created by smoking. Onset is fast, usually within minutes, making it easier to control your dose than with edibles.
The main types
- Dry-herb vaporizers: heat ground flower. You taste the strain’s terpenes and use whole flower.
- Concentrate / oil vapes: use cartridges of cannabis extract. Convenient and discreet, but potent.
- Disposable vapes: all-in-one, no refilling; the simplest entry point.
Using vapes safely
- Buy legal, lab-tested products. This matters even more for vape oil. Illicit-market cartridges have been linked to serious lung injury from additives like vitamin E acetate. Legal Canadian products are regulated and tested.
- Start with one small draw and wait. Concentrate carts especially are strong.
- Mind the temperature on adjustable devices: lower temps preserve flavour, higher temps produce thicker vapour.
- Keep devices clean and store cartridges upright, away from heat.
Is vaping “safer” than smoking?
It avoids combustion smoke, which is a meaningful difference, but no form of inhalation is risk-free, and the long-term picture is still being studied. If you’re choosing a format, weigh it against edibles and other options.

Frequently asked questions
Are cannabis vapes safer than smoking?
Vaporizing avoids combustion, so it produces fewer harmful byproducts than smoking. It isn't risk-free, but it's generally considered easier on the lungs.
What's the difference between dry-herb and concentrate vapes?
Dry-herb vapes heat ground flower; concentrate vapes (carts and pens) heat far more potent oils and extracts. Concentrates aren't a beginner's starting point.
How do I avoid fake or unsafe vape cartridges?
Buy only from provincially licensed retailers. The illegal-market carts behind past lung injuries were unregulated. See our guide on spotting fake vape carts.
Are vapes more potent than flower?
Concentrate vapes are much stronger than flower; dry-herb is similar. Either way, take one small puff and wait before more.
