CBD:THC ratios explained (1:1, 2:1, and more)
Those ratio numbers on product labels actually tell you a lot, once you know how to read them.
You’ll see products labelled “1:1” or “2:1” or “20:1.” Those are CBD-to-THC ratios, and once you understand them, choosing a product gets a lot easier.
How to read a ratio
The numbers are CBD : THC. So:
- 1:1: equal CBD and THC. Mildly intoxicating but softened by the CBD. A popular balanced choice.
- 2:1 to 5:1 (CBD-leaning): more CBD than THC. Gentler, clearer, functional.
- 20:1 (CBD-dominant): mostly CBD, minimal THC. Little to no intoxication.
- THC-forward (low CBD): strong, the classic “high.”
Balance, not strength
This is the part most people miss: a ratio only tells you the proportion, not how much you’re taking. A 1:1 product could be 2.5 mg of each or 25 mg of each. Same ratio, very different experience. Always read the milligrams next to the ratio, and use the edibles dosage calculator to turn a number into a sensible starting dose.
Why CBD changes the experience
CBD doesn’t get you high, and it appears to temper THC’s intensity, taking some of the edge off the anxiety or racing heart that high-THC products can cause. That’s why balanced ratios are often suggested for newcomers.
Choosing by ratio
- New or anxiety-prone: start with higher-CBD or 1:1.
- Want a clear, functional effect: 2:1 or higher CBD.
- Experienced, want intensity: THC-forward.
Not sure where to start? The CBD:THC ratio finder turns what you want to feel into a ratio to try.
Where you’ll find ratios
Ratio products are most common in oils, capsules, and sprays, where the dose is precise, and increasingly in edibles and beverages. Flower is usually THC-forward, though some higher-CBD strains exist.
The fundamentals
This builds on CBD vs THC. Whatever ratio you pick, the dose still matters, so start low and wait.

Frequently asked questions
What does a CBD:THC ratio mean?
The numbers are CBD to THC. A 1:1 is balanced and mildly intoxicating; higher-CBD ratios are gentler; THC-forward is the classic strong effect.
Is a higher ratio stronger?
No. A ratio tells you the balance of CBD to THC, not the strength. Read the milligrams to know how much you're taking; a 1:1 can be gentle or strong depending on the dose.
What is a good ratio for beginners?
Higher-CBD or balanced 1:1 products are gentler and a common recommendation for newcomers or anyone prone to anxiety.
Does more CBD reduce the high?
Yes. CBD tempers THC, taking some of the edge off the anxiety or racing heart that high-THC products can cause.
What ratio keeps me clear-headed?
A 2:1 or higher-CBD ratio gives a milder, more functional effect with less intoxication.
