CBD vs THC: what's the difference?
The two main cannabis compounds, what each does, and how to read the ratio on a label.

Cannabis contains dozens of active compounds, but two do most of the heavy lifting: THC and CBD. Understanding the difference is the foundation for choosing any product.
THC
Tetrahydrocannabinol is the compound behind the “high.” It’s what makes a product intoxicating. More THC means a stronger effect, and a higher chance of side effects like anxiety or a racing heart if you overdo it.
CBD
Cannabidiol is non-intoxicating. It won’t get you high, and many people use it without feeling impaired at all. CBD tends to be the choice for a calmer, clearer experience, and it can take the edge off THC’s intensity.
Why they’re so different
The surprising part: THC and CBD have the same chemical formula. The atoms are just arranged differently. That small structural difference changes how each one fits the body’s receptors, which is why one is intoxicating and the other isn’t. Same building blocks, very different effect.
The other cannabinoids
THC and CBD get the attention, but they aren’t alone. Minor cannabinoids like CBN, CBG, and CBC appear in smaller amounts and add to the overall character. They all act on the body’s endocannabinoid system, the network that cannabis works through.
Reading the ratio
Labels show THC and CBD as percentages or milligrams. The ratio between them shapes the experience:
- High THC, low CBD: strong intoxication
- Balanced (≈1:1): milder, more functional
- High CBD, low THC: little to no high
How to choose
If you’re new or want to stay clear-headed, start with higher-CBD or balanced products and low THC. You can always go stronger; you can’t undo a dose you’ve already taken.

Frequently asked questions
Does CBD get you high?
No. CBD is non-intoxicating. It can feel calming and it softens THC's intensity, but on its own it won't get you high.
What does a 1:1 ratio mean?
Equal parts CBD and THC. It's mildly intoxicating but softened by the CBD, a popular balanced choice. See our guide to CBD:THC ratios.
Is CBD or THC better for anxiety?
Many people find CBD or balanced products gentler, while high-THC can sometimes trigger anxiety. Whichever you choose, start low.
Can I drive after taking CBD?
CBD alone isn't intoxicating, but many products also contain some THC, which impairs you and is illegal to drive on. Check the label, and when in doubt, don't.
